Mugello MotoGP: Iannone takes home victory

1 of 1

Italian rider Andrea Iannone has taken his second victory in three years at the Mugello circuit in front of his home crowd.

Iannone took the lead for the first time on the first corner of the final lap, relegating Pol Espargaro to second. Thomas Luthi finished third despite leading for a large portion of the race.

With eight laps to go it looked as though Espargaro would ease to victory after he pulled a substantial gap on the rest of the lead group.

Espargaro was lucky to stay on just prior to gapping the lead group after a collision with then race leader Luthi. The collision forced the rest of the group to brake heavily, but Espargaro managed to take the lead.

Brit Bradley Smith finished fourth behind Luthi, the Brit visually down on top speed after destroying a new, improved fairing during qualifying yesterday.

Championship leader Marc Marquez was unable to extend his championship lead, the Spaniard finishing fifth after a near crash which he saved on his elbow midway through the race.

Scott Redding managed to get the better of early race leader Takaaki Nakagami to finish sixth.
