Stefan Bradl’s 23rd birthday celebrations took place on a Barcelona hospital bed after the German underwent successful surgery to cure an arm pump issue that plagued him during an impressive rookie MotoGP campaign.

The 2011 Moto2 world champion was operated on by renowned surgeon Dr Xavier Mir at the Instituto Universitario USP Dexeus in Barcelona.

He will be discharged today to commence a three-week recovery period.

The LCR Honda rider, who recently signed a HRC contract for 2014, said: “After the arm pump problem I suffered in Japan this year at Motegi I had my first medical check with Dr Mir two weeks ago and together with the team we decided to make this surgery quickly.

The operation turned out really well and Dr Mir told me my arm was better than he thought, so I am really pleased we took the decision and operated. It’s weird to celebrate my birthday at the hospital but some of the technicians came to visit me and the medical staff have been very good to me.”

Bradl will be back in action when preparations for the 2013 campaign resume at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia in early February.

Bradl finished eighth overall in his rookie campaign and scored a best result of fourth in the Italian round at Mugello.
