WSB America Picture Exclusive Haga survives monster crash

1 of 8

Championship leader Noriyuki Haga survived a huge crash in the final minutes of second qualifying at Miller Motorsports Park. The Japanese rider lost control of his Xerox Ducati exiting Toole turn and was thrown high into the air before landing heavily. Haga remained on the ground and after initially not moving eventually got up and walked to the ambulance where he was taken to the medical centre.

The latest news from the team is that Haga was badly winded and bruised, but has now returned to his pit garage and is expected to take part in this afternoons free practice and Superpole session. Haga was still able to set the seventh fastest time of the session.

Haga’s team-mate Michel Fabrizio had a much better session and moved to provisional pole position ahead of fellow Ducati rider Jacob Smrz and American Ben Spies. Yesterday’s pole man Max Biaggi failed to improve his lap time, but held on to fourth place and a provisional front row start.

Brits Jonathan Rea jumped up from tenth to seventh and Leon Haslam improved dramatically to secure 13th spot. On the flip side Shane Byrne was unable to improve his lap time and dropped to 14th and it was even worse for factory Yamaha man Tom Sykes who hasn’t qualified for Superpole down in 22nd place. Sykes was in good company though and was joined by both factory BMW men Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus outside the top twenty. Tommy Hill ended the session in 25th.
