WSB Miller: On form Camier secures second WSB podium of his career

Leon Camier backed his fourth in race one by storming to an impressive second place finish in race two. The 23 year old claimed second behind team-mate and new championship leader Max Biaggi and in doing so made history for the Italian manufacturer – there first 1 – 2 finish in the series.

Camier’s race results were all the more impressive given the fact that he had two crashes earlier in the weekend and was plagued with front end grip issues in race one.

He said: “In the first race I had a tyre issue and in the second race I gambled on a front tyre that I hadn’t used all weekend. It reacted differently to how I expected and I was slower in the areas I was quick before and vice versa. In the fast corners I was struggling to get the bike turned, but in the slow corners I could push harder. Overall it was better, but at the start I couldn’t do the lap times and that allowed Max to check out.”

Camier also got the benefit of using Aprilia’s controversial gear driven cam engine for the first time. The team introduced it on Sunday and both Camier and Biaggi used it in both races on Monday.

“You can’t actually feel a difference but there is one when you compare the speed to everyone else. In South Africa my bike wasn’t quick, but here it’s been better off the turns and in fifth and sixth gear it’s strong. The problem I’m having is turning. Max can get through the slow corners but I’m struggling. We’re going to be working on that when we test in Misano in a couple of week’s time.”
