Q. I’ve heard new bike tyres need to be “scrubbed in”. What does that mean?
Alan Rathbone, Dorset

A. Tyres come out of the factory covered in a slippery release agent to help them out of the mould.

You need to take extreme care when wearing that off. The first 30 miles should be taken very steadily.

Make sure the tyres are warmed up sufficiently before tipping it into corners hard.

Even better, spend some time on a roundabout and your favourite left-handers so that you can see signs of wear across the entire tyre.
