Suggested text for a letter to your MP

Here’s some suggested text you might want to include in your letter. You could just copy and paste it into a document to send (e-mail or letter).

The Treasury issued a public consultation paper on reforming motorcycle VED last year – and I disagree with many of the points

I am worried that this is a thinly-veiled excuse to raise more tax from bikes. The Treasury has proposed a new higher road tax for machines over 1000cc ‘due to their increased environmental impact’. There is no increased impact, and closing the gap in taxation between a polluting, congesting car, and a jam-busting ‘green’ bike is a mistake.

The treasury is making the mistake of presuming that every bike over 600cc is a ‘leisure vehicle’, a sweeping statement that is fundamentally wrong; Motorcycles of all sizes make fantastic congestion-free commuters.

The fact that London will not include bikes in congestion charging is more evidence for this.

Please pledge your support for a fair deal on motorcycle tax, and let the relevant minister know that far from discouraging rises in bike tax, powered two-wheelers should be encouraged.

Ideally you should adapt it a bit for your own purposes. Nothing makes an MP switch off like exactly the same letter over and over again.
