Update: Congestion charging gets go-ahead

A challenge in the High Court to the Mayor of London’s decision to implement congestion charges in London has failed.

A judge rejected Westminster Council’s argument that the controversial scheme would push traffic in to the areas bordering the surrounding areas.

While bikes will be exempt from paying, motorists will face a £5 per day charge. The Mayor, Ken Livingstone welcomed the decision. He said: ” We’re happy that our entire approach to the introduction of congestion charging, which has involved an unprecedented level of consultation, has been vindicated. ”

An MCN survey conducted on the City’s streets in March this year found that as many as one in four motorists will swop to two-wheels to get to work and avoid any charges.
