Transport campaigners are set to apply for a judicial review into government rules that force speed cameras to be painted yellow.

Two pressure groups, Transport 2000 and the Slower Speeds Initiative, claim that there’s no evidence that high-visibility colours on cameras cause motorists to slow down.

They insist that people merely brake when they see the Gatso, with potentially disastrous consequences for people travelling behind them and both groups are pressing for a reversal of current policy.

Transport 2000’s Vicky Cann said: ” In no other area of criminal enforcement do criminals get warned they might be prosecuted, so why are speeding motorists any different?

” With the current legislation speeding motorists merely brake before a speed camera and then speed away from it again, knowing they are ‘safe’ from prosecution. ”

And Paige Mitchell of the Slower Speeds Initiative added: ” The decision to paint all speed cameras yellow flies in the face of research that shows that cameras should be inconspicuous to deter deliberate speeders and that they are the ones most likely to crash.

” Painting all cameras yellow gives motorists a clear message: If you cannot see a camera, you will not get caught. ”
