Cops praise Croft fans

Police say their six-force crack-down on Croft fans had the desired impact.

The North Yorks force was one of six involved in an anti-speed drive throughout the British Superbike weekend – targeting those heading to and from Croft.

A spokesman for the North Yorks force says the whole operation was about keeping casualties down – and in that respect it has worked.

The good news is that only one bike accident was reported in the area – and that involved a car. A Ford Mondeo was in collision with a VFR400 on Sunday at 4.45pm. There were so many police about that the ‘response’ time was just one minute. The rider suffered leg injuries.

“We are officially chuffed. We can’t praise bikers highly enough. Better than 99.9 per cent acted like the sensible grown-ups they are. It was almost a perfect result,” said the spokesman.

Police estimate 24,500 visited Croft, the majority on bikes. There were no arrests at the track – no public order offences.

In the western division – the route to and from the Dales, four riders were caught speeding (one at 102mph on the A65) and three riders were pulled for crossing double white lines. Three car drivers also face fixed penalties as a result of the operation.
