More cameras on cards

Police want to put mobile speed cameras almost anywhere they fancy – with one Chief Police officer claiming: “We have a particular problem with motorcyclists slowing down for the cameras but then speeding up and dying on the next corner.”

Richard Brunstrom, head of road policing for the Association of Chief Police officers was quoted by the Times. He reckons more cameras will bring accident rates down – despite the fact that deaths on the road have gone up alongside the rise in cameras.

Currently the rules state that cameras can only be used at particular locations with a history of deaths and injuries.

But Brunstrom and senior cops want to put speed traps anywhere within 20km (about 12.5 miles) of accident sites.

He told the Times: “We have got cameras at almost all the identifiable casualty hotspots and yet deaths haven’t gone down because they are happening elsewhere.”
