Riders protest over seaside parking charge

Hundreds of riders protested at new parking rules at one of the coast’s most-popular bike gatherings, on Saturday, March 6.

Hunstanton, on the north Norfolk coast, was home to big bike meets most weekends with hundreds parking free on the prom and on a green just off it. But now the council has banned parking on the prom and started charging £1 to park on the green. Protestors joined a mass ride-in to demand a return to free parking.

Town Mayor Michael Thomas said: ” We took the view that to manage motorcycle parking we would employ a marshal and charge £1. It would be properly regulated and safe. ”

Protestors – organised by MAG – say they would accept the charge IF the profits went to charity.

Bikes can still park free in pay-and-display car parks in the town and at the overflow coach park.
