Our trip around the Alps

1 of 4

During those winter months, there’s a lot of talking about “Next year we should go there…”
Some ideas were ridiculous, but the idea of a 10 day trip to the Alps, with a stop off at Monaco sounded like good one.
We’re Ixy, Big E, Proke, Ed, Dutch, riding a Buell Firebolt, Honda Firestorm, Fazer 1000, Bandit 650S, and a Suzuki GSXF750
After the overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge, we set off on our 560 mile dash through Belgium and France down to Chamonix and the Alps. The weather threw just about everything at us, including gale force crosswinds and torrential rain.  Geneva, appeared to have no French road signs whatsoever (and we had no sat nav). We eventually arrived in Argentiere near Chamonix at 10.45pm, after 13 great hours on the bikes. Great accommodation.
The best moments included the road from Chamonix to Aoste, 80 miles of some of the best roads we’d ever seen, waiting at the traffic lights in Monaco, when Michael Schumacher pulled up on a Harley, and the £15 all you can eat buffet on the P&O Ferry!
The scariest moment was hurtling through dark road tunnels on the way to Monaco following a loon (Big E) on a Honda Firestorm, only topped by watching Ed bin his Suzuki Bandit into the barriers after hitting  unexpected gravel on the way back from Le Thule (He’s ok and the bike was still rideable), and waking up on a Sunday morning with the sun shining and beautiful roads, with no fuel in the bikes and no petrol stations open.
We’d do it all again, particularly after overtaking a bike with pillion, pulling a trailer with a dog in it, at 80mph. But we’ll do it for longer next time.
