Hammond update:

MCN columnist Richard Hammond is making very good progress following a high-speed crash while testing a jet-powered car.

He is now on a general ward, and if continues to do well he will eventually be transferred to a hospital closer to his home near Cheltenham. Meanwhile he has received hundreds of cards and flowers, and an appeal to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which flew him to hospital, has already topped £188,000.

The 36-year-old suffered a significant brain injury during filming for the next series of BBC’s Top Gear. Hammond was driving a jet powered car at Elvington airfield and had reportedly already broken 280mph in a previous run.

During a last run for the cameras the car veered off course and crashed when the slow-down parachute was released. Hammond had to be cut out of the open top car and was taken to hospital in critical condition but is now thought to be stable.

We’ll bring you the latest on his condition as soon as we get an update.
