Government scraps speed camera research

1 of 1

Research into whether speed cameras shift accidents elsewhere was cancelled by Government, it emerged last week.

Research was going to investigate whether speed cameras cause a “migration of accidents” but will instead examine “wider effects of speed cameras and other speed management measures,” the Department for Transport said.
The admission came in response to an enquiry made under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act.

Paul Smith, founder of ant-speed camera campaign group Safe Speed, said: “It is astonishing and grossly irresponsible that DfT has cancelled the important ‘side effects’ research. I can only imagine they were scared about the likely results and would rather save face than save lives.”

Over 18,000 signatures have been added to Safe Speed’s online petition to Tony Blair demanding speed cameras be scrapped: petitions.pm.gov.uk/scrapcamWhat do you think? Let us know where you would spend the research money to improve safety on the roads at mcn.online@emap.com
