Mr Loophole mulling legal action against Gwent police

Celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman says he is considering legal action against Gwent Police, after his practice manager Trevor Howarth was cleared of charges claiming he attempted to pervert the course of justice.

Howarth was accused of advising Janet Lefton, daughter of the founder of insurance firm Swinton, and her son Jeremy to deny receipt of a notification of intended prosecution for a speeding offence.

Freeman says Gwent Police, which investigated the matter, used the case against Howarth as an opportunity to discredit him, despite confirming that he had not been involved with the case, or the Lefton family.

“I did not conduct that case, it was conducted by an independent barrister,” he said after the trial at Bristol Crown Court. “Justice has not yet been done, and I’m now taking advice on what action I can take against those involved in this malicious and corrupt investigation.”

Freeman earned the nickname ‘Mr Loophole’ after successfully defending a number of speeding cases against celebrities by using loopholes in the law.

“I knew that the police were desperate to try and find any evidence to show I was involved in this crime. That was to be expected,” he said, adding. “What I hadn’t appreciated was that, in their attempts to construct a case against me, the police were prepared to behave in such an unethical and dishonest way.”
