MCN 1000: Essential info for biking ambassadors

1 of 2

We’ve launched the MCN 1000 campaign, asking you to become a biking ambassador and help us to introduce new riders to biking and safeguard motorcycling’s future. And we’re offering a top quality Xena disc lock worth £24 to the first 250 readers who recruit a new rider – Click here for details.

To help you get started, here’s some tips for would-be biking ambassadors:

The first stage is getting someone excited about bikes. This should be simple – just wax lyrical about your own love of bikes and the freedom, joy and excitement you get from them.

The next stage is to get them on a bike and taking their Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). Thanks to the Motorcycle Industry Association’s Get On campaign, this isn’t as hard as you’d imagine:

1. Tell them they can have a FREE go on a beginner’s bike, under the guidance of an instructor. Find a centre near you offering this treat at www.geton.co.uk
2. Help them find a decent local bike instructor. Personal recommendation is best, and if you don’t already know someone good, you’re probably the best person to find out who is.
3. Encourage them to book their CBT, and reassure them that it’s a fun and relatively low stress day. More information is on www.geton.co.uk and MCN’s own new rider section
4. Take them with you to bike meets, races or rallies and pass on your old MCNs. The more exposure they have to bikes, the faster they’ll get hooked and the greater knowledge they’ll have when it comes to buying a bike.
5. Be on hand to help them choose and buy their first bike. Whatever they may think, they’ll need you!
6. Read up on the options after CBT on www.geton.co.uk
7. For the best advice on passing the CBT and test go to www.motorcyclenews.com/newrider
