This year's Dakar kicked off on New Year's day and has all the makings of a classic.
Since switching from Africa to South America in 2009, the epic race has undergone another revision for 2012 with the route now stretching from the Mar del Plata on the east coast of Argentina across to Chile, before heading north into Peru for the first time, finishing in Lima on January 15.
Here, British hopeful Stan Watt talks us through some of his equipment, including all his navigation equipment, bikes and riding gear. Watt is currently the highest placed Brit in 46th position overall, 4h23m57s behind leader and three times winner Cyrils Despres.
