I’m split between two models – the very first 916 Strada and the 998R. When it was launched in 1994 the 916 Strada bowled me over. I saw the back end of it in 1993 when I was at the Ducati factory but they wouldn’t let me near it so it wasn’t until the Milan Show later that year that I saw it properly.
My jaw dropped and I just gazed at it for half an hour; at the time, putting a bike as incredible as that on the road was amazing.
The 998R is the pinnacle of all the 916 range; it has everything – performance, style and exclusivity. I couldn’t pick one of these models over the other, I’d have to have them both, sat next to each other in my garage.
I own a 3000-mile, mint, 916 Strada that is totally original, but I don’t have the 998R. We’ve had some beauties passing through the shop. Now I wish I had kept one for myself.
