7 reasons you should ride this week...

1 of 7

1. Twin shock sensations

Durham Dales Classic Trial
Where Middle England Classic Vehicle Club, Co. Durham
When December 18, from 10am
Entry Free
Info durhamdalesclassictrial.org.uk

The Durham Dales Classic Trial has become one of the annual highlights of the trials calendar. Expect to see all sorts of classic cars and motorbikes battling through the mud.

We say Trials riding is hard enough without the added complexity of doing it on a bike that’s 80 years old and doesn’t have a clutch. That said, the breakdowns are part of the fun but be careful what you say, as some of the riders will have bought the bikes new…

2. Rocking into Xmas

Rockers & Classics at the Ace
Where Ace Café, London
When December 16, from 6pm
Entry Free
Info ace-café-london.com

Rockers & Classics might just sound like your average evening out at north London’s Ace Café, but it’s the last proper bikers night before Christmas.

We say Nothing says rockers like intricate pinstriping, excessive pomade and heaps of power. Pop a comb in your top pocket, strap on your open face and head out for one last time before presents get in the way of everything. We guarantee it will be better than braving the office party.

3. Best buy some Daz

91st Wild & Woolly Motocross
Where Arm Farm, Blisworth
When December 26, from 10am
Entry Free to spectate
Info nmcc.co.uk

The Wild & Woolly is a motocross/scramble/mudfest like you’ve never seen. Hopefully you received some new wellies for Christmas because you’re going to need them.

We say If there have been 90 races before, then it must be good right? After about 10 minutes, all of the racers are covered in mud and then it’s anyone’s guess who is actually in the lead. Are they winning? Are they lapped? Who cares, it’s Glastonbury for bikes (and no risk of hearing Coldplay).

4. Plum the depths of winter

Plum Pudding Races
Where Mallory Park, Leicestershire
When December 26, from 9am
Entry £10 (£12 on the gate)
Info malloryparkcircuit.com

The only race meeting on the circuit calendar with two, three and four wheels on the billing, the Plum Pudding Races have become a tradition at the circuit. Breaking with tradition though, there are no qualifying rounds meaning that pole position goes to the first person to get their entry in.

We say If you’re sick of Wallace & Gromit, turkey sandwiches, mince pies or sherry then get off the sofa and head to Mallory Park and watch the only race that can be dictated by how quickly you can fill in a form.

5. Banking on history

Brooklands Museum New Year’s Day Classic Gathering
Where Brooklands Museum, Surrey
When January 1, 10am-4pm
Entry Adults £11, Children £6
Info brooklandsmuseum.com

With over 1000 classic cars and motorcycles expected, the New Year’s Day Classic Gathering should have something for everyone. Alongside the classics there will also be live music and a winter barbeque.

We say The Brooklands Gathering is a great chance to welcome in the New Year with something other than “I’m never drinking again”.

6. Pass me an aspirin

The Hangover Meet
Where Ace Café, London
When January 1, from 10am
Entry Free
Info ace-café-london.com

A hangover meet does pretty much what it says on the tin. Expect petrolheads from all walks of life with eyes like potatoes being a terrifying commonality.

We say The only fog thicker than the sort that casts a shadow on the North Circular is the one that swills around your brain on New Year’s Day. If the two Berocca fizzing away in your glass aren’t helping, then a blast of frosty air and a bacon sarnie with a cup of builder’s tea just might.

7. Kickstart your 2017

Foxborough Extreme Enduro
Where Foxborough Quarry, Essex
When January 2, from 11am
Entry Free to spectate
Info sudburymcc.co.uk

Foxborough Quarry doesn’t get used often, so with all the various natural obstacles (plus the odd log) it should make for unpredictable racing. All the races start with a dead engine, Le Mans style start too.

We say Just try not to jeer too loudly at those stuck on the start line, flailing wildly at their kickstart.
