With a motorcycling heritage that goes back some 90 odd years and a current line up of models that regularly feature as ‘best in class’ and ‘top 10 sellers’ it may come as no surprise that BMW is the focus of the UK’s largest independent single make owners club.

The BMW Club was set up in 1951 by a group of like-minded enthusiasts from the South London area who communicated their social and sporting activities via a hand typed newsletter called the Journal. This proved to be an effective way of attracting new members, and as the circulation grew regional groups formed – today there are 15 active sections covering the whole of the UK, Northern Ireland and Eire.

TOP STORIES

Each regional section holds a weekly meet as well as organising several events throughout the year, ranging from local ride outs to weekends away and international tours. Of course, all activities are published in the Journal – which is now colour and glossy rather than just put together on an old Imperial typewriter – as an invitation to any member. There is regular interaction between sections and for many people, riding to various meets around the country is what membership is all about. In addition to the regional sections there are specialist groups to cater for specific interests, namely the GS, Sporting, Sidecar and Classic & Vintage registers. One way or another The BMW Club represents the full range of BMW motorcycles, from vintage airheads to the latest GS Adventure and S1000RRs.

As anyone who has worked on a BMW can testify there are certain jobs that require specialist tools, and to that end the club operates an effective tool hire service. Anything from a vintage cylinder head spanner to an electronic diagnostic box for the latest bikes is available and a wealth of technical advice is on hand for any model from any era via the website forum.

Products Editor, shed enthusiast and tournament winner. Justin has been a regular contributor to MCN since 2009, working as a road tester, roving reporter and feature writer. He has built up a wealth of experience in putting the latest machinery through its paces, as well as subjecting every aspect of motorcycle kit to the rigours of real-world riding. A lifelong two-wheel enthusiast with a deep passion for motorcycles, Justin first hit the streets at 16 on a Suzuki TS50X and has since owned more bikes than he cares to remember. A spell as a London courier saw him cut his biking teeth on some of the country’s busiest roads and as an instructor he has striven to give many a novice the grounding to do the same. Justin has ridden on four continents (so far), both as a solo rider and as a tour guide, tackling terrain from the perilous mountain roads of the Himalayas to rugged South African dirt tracks, sweeping North American highways and the glorious passes of the European Alps. He likes nothing more than an early start for a full day in the saddle and takes great pleasure in sniffing out those roads less travelled – to Justin, every bike is an adventure bike. When not testing products, Justin can usually be found in his shed, where he maintains, restores and rebuilds not just bikes, but anything mechanical that comes his way. He currently owns a 2010 Triumph Sprint 1050 ST, 1998 Yamaha TRX 850 and is running a 2024 Harley-Davidson Pan America CVO as a long termer.
