India’s second-biggest bike maker sold almost as many bikes in January 2005 as the entire UK bike industry sold in all of last year.

Bajaj sold 132,028 motorcycles in the month. The total number of bikes sold in the UK were down 14% to 133,938 last year.

Bajaj sales are up over 50 per cent year on year and the firm is on course to have sold 1.5 million bikes and scooters by the end of this financial year.

But the firm’s performance pales alongside India’s biggest bike make – Hero Honda. Its January bike sales were up 18 per cent to 230,280.
