The number of new bikes bought last month grew a massive nine per cent compared to this time last year – with BMW’s R1200GS leading the growth.

The most popular bike in the UK is still the Suzuki GSX-R1000, according to figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association and the Bike Reviews section of this site. The GSX-R1000 is consistently our most requested review.

But it is ‘Trail’ style bikes like the R1200GS that are showing the most growth with the number of bikes sold increasing by 50 per cent compared to last year with the GS leading the pack, followed by Honda’s learner-legal Varadero 125.

The leading 600 is Kawasaki’s ZX-6R with the Suzuki SV650S taking the crown in the sports touring category, which has also grown by 10 per cent.

Scooter sale are still in freefall, thoug,h showing a 10 per cent drop compared to last year, balancing out the rise in bikes and meaning total new registration have only grown by 1 per cent.

With fuel prices charging higher than £1 a litre, scooters may be due a return to form any time soon.
