MILAN SHOW: Ducati's new air-cooled Monster 797

Published: 07 November 2016

It’s great to have an air-cooled 2-valve engine back in a Monster package again, harking right back to the original bikes from the early 90s. This new addition to the burgeoning Monster family uses the 803cc Desmodue L-twin from the Scrambler, but packages it in an utterly contemporary, but endearingly simplistic, package. With a price tag that swings from the bars from £7895 (for a red one), it’s also likely to drag a new generation of future Ducatisti in to the marque.

Highlights

  • Air-cooled 803cc L-twin
  • 10-spoke lightweight wheels
  • Bosch ABS
  • Steel trellis frame
  • LCD dash

The facts

  • 75bhp
  • 193kg
  • Seat height 805mm

TOP STORIES

Of course, at this price (you could have nine of these and some change left over for the price of a Superleggera) it couldn’t be much further removed from the top-end of Ducati excess. That means a simplistic but refined 75bhp, 50.8ftlb torque, 803cc air-cooled engine, slipper clutch, a twin-spar swingarm, non-adjustable KYB 43mm fork, and preload/rebound adjustable Sachs monoshock.

The amount of electronic rider aids is at the bare minimum too. There’s no traction control to lean on, but you do get the excellent Bosch 9.1MP ABS module, mated to a thoroughly decent pair of Brembo M4.32 calipers that will easily haul the 797’s 193kg kerb mass plus rider down to an abrupt halt. The wheels are alloy 10-spoke items that wear a 120/70 17 front tyre, and a 180/55 17 rear – which are Pirelli Diablo Rosso II as standard fitment.

The frame is a pleasing tubular steel trellis affair, and the 16.5litre tank is also steel – meaning rugged longevity, and that you can chuck a magnetic tank bag on for the daily grind, too.

Those who struggle with tall seat heights will hopefully get on well enough with the 805mm seat on the 797, and once in position you’ll get a classic view over wide bars to a fully LCD dash. The 797 is also enabled to use Ducati’s Multimedia System, and boasts a USB power socket to keep you powered up and connected on the move.
