Route confirmed for 2004 Dakar Rally

The route of the 2004 Dakar Rally was confirmed this week and will see the competition take in seven countries and cover a massive 11,052km.

The 563 competitors, 200 of whom will be on bikes, will have to complete 17 stages starting from the Grande Halle d’Auvergne, in France, on January 1. They’ll then wind their way down through Spain and Africa to the final stage at Dakar, Senegal, on the west coast of Africa on January 18.

The route includes three stages in Europe, four stages in Morocco, six stages in Mauritania, two stages in Mali, one stage in Burkina Faso and one stage in Senegal with the longest stage being a strength sapping 1055km from Tan-Tan in Morocco to Atar in Mauritania.
