Alex and Sam Lowes, Cadwell Park May 11

Lincoln identical twin racers Alex and Sam Lowes rewrote the history books on Sunday when the two ACU Academy riders ended their race on the podium with Sam taking his first win and brother Alex in third place in the Aprilia Superteen championship.

The result caused quite a stir amongst the media who could not remember identical twins stepping onto a rostrum at a national motorcycle meeting before in the history of motorcycle racing let alone two so young – the boys only turned 12 in September.

Qualifying went well for Alex and Sam with Alex coming out top and qualifying for a front row start to the set of two races at Cadwell, brother Sam was right behind him on row two as sixth fastest competitor.

As they took their places for the opening race of the day the brothers were away to a good start with Alex fifth and Sam sixth but positions changed a lap later when Sam came flying through to establish fifth for a while.

Alex was not giving up his position lightly and moved back ahead, Sam being pushed further back when Hickman went through at the bottom of the mountain.

Although Alex made ground setting the fastest lap of the race in the process, he was unable to catch Gilbertson in third and took the chequered flag for a strong fourth place with brother Sam five seconds adrift in sixth place.

In wet and slippery conditions the brothers took to the track for the second leg and this time Alex was fifth off the line with Sam right alongside in sixth place. It was neck and neck as they powered down to Park and as they crossed the line to complete lap two Sam had moved ahead and into second place with Alex remaining in fifth.

The top five riders pulled well clear of the pursuing pack and Sam took the lead from Mike Thompson at Coppice on the penultimate lap. He held the lead to the flag to take his first win in the series.

Meanwhile Alex had moved ahead of Robbie Brown into third place and he crossed the finish line to join his brother on the podium to the delight of the crowd.

This fine set of results moves both boys up the standings, Sam to fifth place on 66 points and Alex to sixth just five points behind on 61 and they will be going all out for more of the same at the next round scheduled for Brands Hatch on Whit Monday, May 26.
