Sylvain Guintoli throws away his crutches

BSB Suzuki star Sylvain Guintoli continues to make rapid progress from the serious leg injuries he sustained at Donington Park back in May.

He was back at Donington Park today, limping around the press office minus his crutches and hanging out with the French press corps.

“I’ve broken my sticks in two, “ he told MCN. “I don’t want to see them again! I’m getting better all the time and my progress is good. I’m already walking a lot earlier than the doctors thought I would.

“The more I do, the better, because it stimulates blood flow and that helps the healing (process).

“I’ve walked from the car park to the paddock but I still have to be careful because my leg still tends to swell (with fluid). But it’s all very positive and there’s a possibility I may be able to race again before the end of the season.

“But I still have to see on the x-rays how it is progressing. I had an x-ray after six weeks (mid July) and things were okay and then I have one around the same time as the Brands Hatch BSB round (in two weeks time).”

It’s difficult to mention Guintoli’s name without linking him back to the incident at Donington in May, triggered by Josh Brookes.

But Guintoli won’t be drawn into discussing Brookes, either in context of the Donington crash that ruined what had the makings of a stellar season for the Suzuki star, or Brookes’ recent Mallory incident.

“All I will say is that is was disastrous for my season and the last two months have been very difficult for me. I’ve nothing more to say about it.”

But Guintoli has clearly been blown away by the support he’s had from BSB fans.

“Yeah, the British public seem to like me –which is always a bonus. I’m trying my best, trying my best to recover as fast as I can.

“I’d love to be back, at least for the final race of the season – and win it. But I’m only coming back if I am fit enough to win races. I hope I can do that.”

Talk suggests the popular Frenchman has already got a contract on the table with the Worz Suzuki team for 2010 but Guintoli explained the true situation.

“Nothing is signed but I’m with a very good team and I was really happy until the accident happened.

“As I don’t have a contract in place, I’m looking at different options – but the BSB option is definitely a good one.”
