MCN’s top ten BSB riders: 2nd

1 of 1

With all the dust settled on yet another highly competitive year in the MCE British Superbike championship, MCN have taken the opportunity to look back on the season and sort our top ten riders – based on more than just race results!

2nd: Shane Byrne

  • Championship position: 1st
  • Wins: 10
  • Podiums: 23

It might seem strange to have the now four-time champion only at second, but that in no way takes away from what Shane Byrne achieved in 2014. Dominating the championship yet again, he was almost unstoppable in the early part of the season to build up an unassailable year.

In fact, the only reason he didn’t top the list is that the PBM Kawasaki rider did exactly what was expected of him this season. Remaining with his ultra-strong team, he started the season with an edge over his rivals, many of whom had switched teams in the winter, and hammered home his title lead in the early stages.

Taking ten wins and a further thirteen podiums from twenty six races, he totally dominated the season, and only the Showdown format gave Ryuichi Kiyonari any chance of victory until his Brands accident.

With 2015 plans already sorted with Paul Bird, it’ll take a herculean effort to stop him taking a record breaking fifth crown.
