Rossi back on pole

Valentino Rossi has qualified on pole position for the first time since the British GP last year.

The Italian was back on form for the Catalunya GP putting in a string of fast laps at the end of the session after getting his race setup.

Rizla Suzuki’s John Hopkins got another second place start, finishing the session just 0.13 seconds behind Rossi.

Kenny Roberts proved that Honda power was what the KR team needed taking the final place on the front row of the grid.

Chris Vermeulen starts the race directly behind team-mate Hopkins followed by the Kawasaki of Shinya Nakano and Loris Capirossi on the Ducati.

The first Honda rider was Nicky Hayden in seventh.
