Moto3 grid could feature 40 bikes

Moto3, the new 250cc four-stroke class that will replace the current 125GP series in 2012, looks like attracting a bumper entry of 40 bikes.

Interest in the new class is booming and MotoGP bosses reckon the inaugural Moto3 series could attract a 40-strong entry when the 125cc two-strokes are replaced at the end of the season.

When the new 600cc four-stroke Moto2 class was introduced in 2010, organisers faced a deluge of interest with almost 50 teams expressing early interest.

A spokesman said: “Moto3 has attracted a lot of interest already and it looks like it will be well over subscribed. The intention was to have 36 bikes but it could be like Moto2 and we might need to allow 40.”

Honda is already track testing its 250cc four-stroke motor in Japan while Yamaha has also stated its intention to participate in the new class.
