MotoGP: Laverty eyes up Grand Prix opportunities

Eugene Laverty has been left eyeing up opportunities to remain next year in the MotoGP paddock – despite a number of strong offers that could well see him return to the World Superbike championship on factory machinery.

“I’m sizing things up at the minute and looking at both paddocks – but the important this is to have a competitive bike. I’ve been waiting to hear what we can do with the Aspar team, because it’s a competitive bike this year but it’s not close enough yet.

“There are competitive bikes in WSB but I’m keen to stay here. There’s a Ducati option, but there’s other competitive bikes as well. I was close to a deal with Kawasaki in recent weeks, but decided to wait to see what’s going to happen in GP.”

However, his options will no doubt be aided once again by a strong result at Assen, where he kept his head to bring the Aspar Honda home in an impressive seventh while many around him lost their heads.

“I made a really good start and made up a lot of positions but from lap two to around lap six I kept losing the front, I almost crashed so many times and with so many other riders crashing out around me I had to be really careful.

“Over the last five laps the front tyre started to come better again and I was able to go really fast – we just ran out of time to catch the guys in front. Seventh place after so much drama was a good result!”
