MotoGP: Viñales wins last lap duel as Rossi and Marquez crash out

1 of 1

Maverick Viñales has come out on top of a frantic last lap duel with teammate Valentino Rossi, after a rare mistake from Rossi with only a few corners to go left him on the gravel and out of the championship lead.

Johann Zarco was an early race leader, making a break at his home race to control the first half of the battle, until Viñales made his move and got through to the lead. However, Rossi soon put the hammer down himself, taking the lead from Viñales only to first concede the lead half way round the last lap before a mistake at turn eleven took him out of the race.

That handed Zarco an impressive second place in front of his home fans, with an incredible ride from 13th on the grid taking Dani Pedrosa to a podium finish in third.

Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo rallied to fourth and sixth after a difficult weekend for the Ducatis, split only by Cal Crutchlow in fifth.

Bradley Smith was the best of the rest of the Brits in 13th, ahead of Sam Lowes, taking his first points on the Aprilia in 14th. Scott Redding was an early retirement with a mechanical problem.
