Moto3: Binder loses pole to Mir thanks to last lap backmarker

Red Bull Ajo KTM rider Brad Binder, who has dominated this weekend so far at the manufacturer’s home Austrian Grand Prix, has been denied pole position after traffic on his fastest lap of qualifying saw him baulked at the line.

Controlling every session this weekend, the championship leader had posted three fast sectors en route to the top spot, but a rejoining Albert Arenas in the final sector left him unable to improve on second.

Leopard Racing rookie Joan Mir instead took the top spot by 0.1, with Enea Bastianini the top Honda and rounding out the front row of the grid, some 0.3 seconds off Binder in front.

Scotsman John McPhee will start in 29th, showing impressive form throughout the weekend but unable to capitalise on it for qualifying – but remaining only a second and a half slower than pole man Mir.
