Dunlop on the road to fitness after TT crash

Michael Dunlop is well along the road to full fitness after his crash in the opening race of this year’s Isle of Man TT, where a collision with a backmarker only a mile from home cost him second place in the opening Superbike TT.

Speaking properly for the first time about the crash ahead of competing in last weekend’s Donegal International Rally, he revealed to local station Highland Radio the full extent of his injuries.

“The body suffered a wee bit at the TT, and I struggled after that crash. I broke a bone in my hand and one in my wrist, as well as some nerve damage in my shoulder. I took a massive blow to my groin area too, which left me losing feeling to my feet.

“I’ve been to see the doctor again this week though, and I think we’re all up and running again now – it’s just going to take time to heal up. It’s definitely stiff and sore, but that’s life!

“I’ve went two years and done four in a week each year, which has never been done before, then I go this year and come away with nothing – but that’s just the sport. There’s a lot of boys come home from there with a lot worse – I can come home with a grumpy head on me and say ‘that wasn’t to be’ but there’s people with serious injuries. I’m lucky enough to come home, even battered and bruised, but it’s not the end of the world – it’s just one of those things.”

Dunlop’s next outing is now set to be the Southern 100 in two weeks time, before taking in a number of Irish national races and returning to international competition at the Ulster Grand Prix in August.
