World Supersport contender Eugene Laverty is under no illusion what he needs do this weekend in Assen in order to get back to the front of the championship standings.

Laverty’s 2010 season got off to a perfect start with a dominant win first time out in Phillip Island, but a crash in Portimao followed by fifth place in Valencia has seen him drop to third in the standings 20 points behind leader Joan Lascorz.

In 2009 Laverty won a dramatic Assen race ahead of Cal Crutchlow and Kenan Sofuoglu and knows that he needs to repeat the victory this weekend.

He said: “As a team we know what we have to do. The last two results have cost us a lot of points so I need to start clawing them back this weekend.

“I didn’t necessarily expect win here last year, but the Honda works well at this track so hopefully we can have a good weekend.”

First Free Practice gets underway at 14.00 local time.
