Aragon WSB: Sykes wins from hard charging Melandri

1 of 2

Tom Sykes has fought off a charging Marco Melandri and teammate Loris Baz to take a double victory at Motorland Aragon in the second race of the weekend, after a frantic last lap battle.

Sykes led for most of the rest, with teammate Loris Baz in second in what looked like a repeat performance of race one. However, a late charge from the Italian brought his factory Aprilia through to fight with the Kawasaki duo, and after discarding Baz Melandri was bale to take the fight to Sykes on the last lap.

However, a mistake on the last lap at the chicane that has caused so much drama this weekend ran the former world champion wide and allowed Baz to regain the second placed spot.

Sylvain Guintoli came through to pass Jonathan Rea, running in third, to take that spot before teammate Melandri passed both of them to join the battle for the lead, leaving the pair in fourth and fifth. Eugene Laverty, recovering again from a bad start, came through to finish sixth, while his Voltcom Crescent Suzuki teammate Alex Lowes crashed out, as did fellow Brit Chaz Davies.

Davide Guigliano was seventh, while Leon Haslam won a battle against Tony Elias to take eighth on the final lap. A mistake from Leon Camier cost him a top ten, dropping him to 13th at the flag.
