Scott Nicholls' diary: Dreaming of first victory in Cardiff

The diary-week began with a trip to Poland in a bid to get my Polish engines sorted.

Sky’s Kelvin Tatum came over with me and I think that we made good progress. You can’t put everything right in a single session but it felt good.

We had a home league meeting on the Friday and although I only scored 10 points, it felt so much better, it felt like I had the equipment to actually win races on.

I came back to ride for Eastbourne on the Saturday, in a Knock Out Cup meeting against Wolverhampton. They were a bit below strength but we absolutely annihilated them 60 – 30 or something, the whole team rode well.

I scored a maximum that night, I think that it was my first full maximum of the season. I’ve had quite a few 14’s but that was the first 15, which felt good.

Sunday was Jonno’s (Steve Johnston) testimonial at Coventry, five rounds and the winner takes all – and I got my second maximum of the season. I had Leigh Adams and Jason Crump in the final race and neither of those boys wants to lose, so I was pleased with that.

Then Monday was the return leg against Wolverhampton and we went through quite comfortably.

Then it was back to Sweden where unfortunately we lost a home meeting which was much unexpected. Personally though I had four rides and only dropped one point so from that perspective it was good.

Sophie picked me up at the airport and we went straight into central London, I had to get a visa for Russia as I’m riding out there in July.

All thoughts now turn to Cardiff on Saturday for the Britsh Grand Prix, biggest meeting of the season – not just for me and the rest of the British boys but for the likes of Crumpie and Leigh Adams who live over here as well.

It is their home Grand Prix as well. It is the biggest one on the calendar for sure and the one that we all most look forward to.

One of the questions that I always seem to be asked in the lead up to Cardiff is ‘what is it like to stand there with 45,000 people cheering when they announce your name?’

It may sound a bit corny but it really does make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Knowing that 40,000 plus people are really willing you to do well, is just amazing.

It is a huge feeling of pride that so many people are on your side. It is unbelievable to have 40,000 people behind you. Seeing all of the flags and Union Jacks with your name on them, it’s unbelievable, and you know that there is a huge audience at home as well who are also willing you on.

I would be a great place to get my first Speedway GP win, it’s quite frustrating that it’s not happened yet, I’ve been close. I know it will happen and I’d just be delighted if it was this weekend.
