motorcyclenews.com’s commercial chief Adam Hitchcox thought he was going to die in the spectacular warm-up-lap explosion that stunned the crowds at Oulton Park on Monday.

Hitchcox looks after ad revenues on the site when he’s not on the track competing in the Superbike Cup, the championship run alongside the British Superbike series. When Vince Whittle’s Ducati 996RS exploded into flames Hitchcox was following close behind.

He said: ” I was bimbling down to the last corner preparing myself for the start and next thing it’s the battle of the Somme. As I hit the floor I looked up and I was just sliding into a huge wall of flames.

” I really thought I wouldn’t get out of it alive. Someone up there was looking out for me. ”
