BSB: Byrne out for first Cadwell win since 2003

After a commanding double victory at Brands Hatch last time out, Shane Byrne heads to Cadwell Park for the eighth round of the MCE British Superbike Championship as the man to beat this weekend.

However, the four-time British champion’s record at the quirky Lincolnshire circuit leaves a lot to be desired. Byrne hasn’t won at Cadwell since his days on the Monstermob Ducati in 2003.

Last year, Cadwell was one of just two rounds at which Byrne missed out on the podium, but he’s confident of rectifying that this time around after a positive two-day test earlier this month.

MCN understands Byrne was lapping the 2.1-mile track at lap record pace on their second evening of testing, suggesting his Cadwell woes could be put behind him this Bank Holiday weekend.

However, with championship rivals Leon Haslam and Jason O’Halloran also showing strong pace in their respective tests, he could face a strong challenge from the opposition as he looks to cement his place in the showdown.

“Cadwell Park up next for us, it’s an exciting, narrow and difficult track to go really fast at and it’s especially hard to overtake,” he said. “We recently had back to back, two-hour evening tests there so we should start somewhere near where we need to be. A lot of our rivals spent two whole days there last week but we know what we did and we know what we need to do to improve. I’m hoping to cement my place in the Showdown this weekend and keep up the strong results which the Be Wiser PBM Ducati team want and deserve.”
