Build your dream bike: Best Lego motorcycles as chosen by MCN

Not all biking ‘buys’ have to be sensible. It’s not always about purchasing prudent protective gear or investing in wise accessories. Lego motorcycles show bikes can be fun and frivolous as well.

And who, whatever age you may be, hasn’t had a blast building Lego? The Danish building-block concept has come a long way since the days of DIY brick buildings and cars that all look the same.

Today you can build the Millennium Falcon, the Eiffel Tower or even a Bugatti Chiron out of Lego, but it’s no longer reserved just for car fans – yes, you can build bikes, too.

Now out of production and rare, hence the price. And yes, technically speaking the R1200GS is now obsolete, too, having been superseded by the R1250GS in 2019 but Lego doesn't get much better than this!

Created in collaboration with BMW’s own engineers, the completed model measures over 33cm long and 18cm high, the boxer engine has moving pistons, there’s also working front and rear suspension, steering, shaftdrive and sidestand, and, if all that’s not enough, the whole thing also converts into a unique concept machine – brilliant!

Pros

  • Fabulous detail
  • Moving/working parts
  • Includes alternative model

Cons

  • Um, the price...

Another awesome Lego motorcycle but this time at a far more affordable price, simply because its still in production and widely available. Like the similarly-sized BMW R1200GS, this Panigale model features working front and rear suspension and turning wheels.

It's 32cm long and was built in collaboration with Ducati, but unlike the BMW above features detachable fairing panels (so you can see the glorious V4 engine) and even a two-speed gearbox. Recommended for those aged 10+ (or even 50+) it’s a fabulous gift.

Pros

  • Great detail
  • Working gears
  • Detachable fairing panels

Cons

  • Not quite as clever as the GS

This time from Legos more authentic-looking Creator series (rather than the Technic series which emphasises moving and working parts), this model of the iconic Harley-Davidson Fat Boy is arguably the ultimate Lego motorbike.

There are 1028 parts so builders are recommended to be 16+, its big ‘Milwaukee-Eight’ 107ci V-twin engine features visible moving pistons, there’s a flip-down side stand, a tank- mounted speedo, authentic reproductions of the Fat Boy’s iconic solid disc wheels and even adjustable mirrors. Amazing!

Pros

  • Fabulous looks
  • Attention to detail
  • As sophisticated as they get

Cons

  • Not cheap
Price: $37.95

This more traditional Lego motorcycle kit allows you to make three different types of bike superbike, classic roadster and futuristic hover bike rather than just one prescribed model, so has bags of potential and is arguably more fun for kids (real ones, that is, not just big ones).

It’s designed for ages 8+, contains 236 parts and the superbike features working suspension, steering and sidestand, too. Not at all bad considering it costs well under 20 quid.

Pros

  • Versatility
  • Easy for younger builders
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not as authentic
Price: $185.31

$19.00

Another more basic Lego motorcycle that's now selling on Amazon for something of a premium as its been discontinued but, hey, its Lego, its Indiana Jones and its a motorbike chase scene so what's not to like?

This one’s accessible to those of just six years and up, contains 79 pieces, the Indy figure even has a whip, hat and shoulder bag, the motorbike has a detachable sidecar, the security gate moves up and down and it also contains Professor Henry Jones and guard figures too, for hours of entertainment.

Pros

  • Very versatile
  • Easy and fun
  • Accessible from ages 6+

Cons

  • Minimal motorcycle elements

Another Technic offering and sadly, another that is now discontinued, so the price is at a premium, this set allows the builder to create a pair of street motorcycles; a sporty naked roadster and a low-down custom cruiser.

This Lego motorcycle kit contains 375 pieces and the bike features front and rear suspension, chain drive, working steering and moving pistons on the engine and a faux Gulf-style light blue and red colourscheme.

Pros

  • Two bikes for the price of one
  • Intricate working detail
  • Aged from 9

Cons

  • Price as discontinued

A bit of a bargain, as stock is limited but this is a variation on a theme. Not a reproduction of a genuine, or even a representative bike but this stunt bike is formed from the Technic system and features a pull-back motor to power it over the included jump for all sorts of big-air high jinks.

It features low-profile tyres, fat pipes and old-school graphics. Plenty of opportunity to build and re-build.

Pros

  • More active than most
  • Useful Technic inventory
  • Cool look and feel

Cons

  • Best for younger kids
Price: $101.03

OK, its not strictly a motorcycle but it certainly uses similar skills to ride and to build. Another example from the intriguing Technic line, this Skidoo is a faithful representation of a snowmobile and features functioning front suspension on each skid and a moving rear drive track.

The steering operates as well and it morphs into a motocross-style snow bike, with drive track where the rear wheel should be and a skid where the front would normally go. What's not to like about this Lego motorcycle.

Pros

  • Usual Technic attention to detail
  • Something a bit different
  • Two models in one

Cons

  • Not faithful to motorcycling
