Sporty styling meets touring practicality: HJC R-PHA 70 helmet review

1 of 11

I’ve been a fan of HJC motorcycle helmets for a number of years and have tried various flip-front and full-faced versions. This particular model, the HJC R-PHA 70 helmet has been around for a few years which means there’s various deals to be had, if you shop around.

It’s made from a combination of materials, including carbon, which makes it lightweight and from first wear it’s been incredibly comfortable, and took very little breaking in.

It’s interesting that over the years I’ve found either my head has grown or the HJC lids have shrunk, I’ve had to go up a size from small to medium. That said, with the correct size, the HJC R-PHA 70 helmet fits well, padding is soft and snug, without rubbing and it took little to no time to break in.

Construction Carbon fibre, aramid, carbon-glass hybrid fibre
Type Full-faced touring lid
CE rating garment ECE22.05
  • Double d-ring fastener
  • Internal drop-down sun visor
  • Emergency removal
  • Vents
  • Pinlock insert

Operated by a slider on underside of the chin bar, the drop-down sun visor is easy to operate and offers a decent amount of shade. The visor, which comes with an anti-fog Pinlock, locks with a clip, front and centre, it’s easy to open, even with a gloved hand. Vents are plentiful and work, there’s one on the chinbar, one on the forehead and two to the rear.

Most of the lids I’ve worn of late have had seat belt buckle closure, whereas this has the double d-ring fastener. As the HJC R-PHA 70 helmet is made from a combination of materials, including carbon, at 1450kg it’s relatively lightweight.

With subtle red, grey and black graphics, I like my design and the matt effect is great. There’s loads of colour options available, so choices for all. The lid takes styling cues from the sporty R-PHA 11 but with the practicality of a touring lid, which makes it stylish and practical.

HJC R-PHA 70 Helmet

The HJC R-PHA 70 helmet is top quality and after riding through all weathers and a heavy handed owner, it’s showing no signs of wear and tear. Lining remains plush and, unlike other lids, hasn’t bobbled. I like the fact it has the emergency red tab system, just in case of an accident or incident!

As this lid has been on the market a while, it meets with the previous ECE22.05 standard and has also been rated 3 on the Sharp system. Priced at £249.99, this is a great value, carbon hybrid lid.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a touring lid but with a sporty feel, this HJC R-PHA 70 helmet is a great option. It’s good value, stylish and comfortable. What more do you need?
