Motorcycle insurance bargains: BMW F650GS

Motorcycle insurance costs are an important consideration for any bike buyer. That's why MCN is highlighting some of the best cheap-to-insure motorcycles out there. This time it's the BMW F650GS.

Insurance group: 8
Used price: £4,200-£5,900
Engine: 798cc 8v parallel twin, 6 gears
Power: 71bhp
Top speed: 120mph
Weight: 179kg

The latest BMW F650GS is actually hiding an 800cc parallel twin lump behind the confusing model name. It's basically a good-value road version of the F800GS. At just group 8, it won't cost a fortune to insure either.

With more basic, shorter-travel suspension than its F800GS brother and a smaller front wheel the F650GS has both a low, novice-friendly seat height (and an even lower 765mm low seat kit is available as an extra) plus more predictable and secure road-orientated handling.

The F650GS' motor is a detuned version of the motor found in the F800 series. Thanks to softer cams, power is down from 85bhp to 71bhp, with a healthy extra bit of low-down grunt. It’s both flexible and novice-friendly, yet with enough top end to be truly versatile.
