Published: 11 November 2001

Giant trailie sales are rising faster than in any other sector of motorcycling, according to the latest figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association.

Registrations of new bikes in the category, which includes examples such as the Triumph Tiger and Honda Varadero, are up 50 per cent on last year.

In October 261 " adventure sport " bikes were registered, up 88 on the same month last year, bringing the total year-to-date sold to 3072 compared to 2048 last year. That represents the largest growth in percentage terms at close to 50 per cent.

But sports bikes remain Britains favourite with nearly 30,000 sold so far this year.

Britain’s biggest selling powered two wheeler though isn’t the CBR600 (with 3950 registered this year) it’s the Piaggio Zip scooter (3692).

In fact, sports bike sales have dipped by 14 per cent on last year.

Total registrations, which includes scooters as well as motorcycles, shows a 1 per cent increase over last year.
