This is what makes us tick…apparently

Rider skills experts The Edge has commissioned a university researcher to examine what makes motorcyclists tick.

Geoff Crowther, from Huddersfield University, is working on a three-year project for the Coventry-based programme and he reckons we’re are motivated by a variety of factors.

He says: ” People start motorcycling for a whole host of reasons. They want excitement and enjoy the challenge as a form of escape from their everyday life.

He adds: ” Newcomers can see motorcycling as a channel for self-expression and self-realisation. Riders also get a sense of belonging through owning a bike and all the necessary gear. ”

Crowther also cited a host of other factors that inspire people to take to biking. They include:

*Motorcycling is seen as spontaneous and active.

*Riders want to be excited but do not want to put themselves at risk.

*Search for the ‘flow’ or ‘buzz’. Crowther explains this as, ‘a sense of involvement which transcends mundane experience’

Do you agree with Crowther? Do you ride in order transcend the mundane? What made you start riding? Click on the link on the right to share your views.
