Your scores reveal Suzuki riders have more fun

1 of 1

Suzuki riders wear the biggest grins when riding…but they are only fractionally wider than those worn by most riders of modern machinery.

It’s just one of the results of our giant survey of almost 1200 owners. These are the people who have filled in an owners report on this site (which you’ll find in our BIKES section).

Each individual has rated their bike across a range of categories and revealed what they have paid for everything from insurance to servicing.

This week we’ve published their findings day-by-day. And today we complete the figures with a final batch. We’ve also totalled them all up to find a best manufacturer, as you rate them.

Today we’re looking at average mpg, service costs, handling, brakes, comfort, how easy bikes are to work on, the all-important grin factor and your overall satisfaction with your bikes.

The scores are the averages across each marque.

It seems BMW owners eke the most from their fuel, getting an average of 48mpg. At the other end of the scale Aprilia riders are getting an average of 35mpg.

Average mpg: BMW: 48 Triumph:44 Honda: 42 Yamaha: 41 Ducati: 40 Kawasaki: 40 Suzuki: 39 Aprilia: 35

Servicing costs can vary across the country, but as an average, this is what you told us you are paying:

Average Service Costs: Suzuki: £115, Honda £119, Yamaha £125, Aprilia: £125, Kawasaki: £133, Triumph: £148, BMW £157, Ducati: £289

How you rate the handling of a bike can be very subjective. Does it do what you expect it to do? If you like stability you’ll rate a stable bike higher, if you like a fast rate of turn you’ll do likewise for a bike which offers that. This is how you rated your bikes on average.

Handling: Ducati: 94, Aprilia 92, BMW 92, Honda 90, Kawasaki 90, Triumph 89 Yamaha 89, Suzuki 88

Here are your scores for the brakes on your bikes.

Brakes: Ducati: 92, Triumph 92, Yamaha 92, Kawasaki 91, Aprilia 90, BMW 87, Honda 86, Suzuki 86

Looking for an easy ride? Here’s how you rate the butt to seat interface

Comfort: BMW 93, Kawasaki 90, Honda 89, Yamaha 89, Triumph 88, Suzuki 85, Ducati: 79, Aprilia 78

How easy is it to do a bit of home mainenance on your bike? This is something most of us shy away from these days, as reflected in the relatively low scores you give all the manufacturers.

Ease of working on: Suzuki 79, Yamaha 79, Honda 73, Kawasaki 73, Triumph 70, Aprilia 68, Ducati: 66, BMW 63

How much joy does your bike bring you? You score for that with your Grin Factor.

Grin factor: Suzuki 95, Aprilia 94, BMW 94, Ducati: 94, Kawasaki 94, Yamaha 94, Honda 93, Triumph 90

Overall satisfaction: Honda 93, Kawasaki 93, Yamaha 93, Aprilia 92, Ducati: 92, Suzuki 92, Triumph 92, BMW 91

That’s a lot of figures to take in and interpret. We went through all of these and those published earlier this week to come up with one big rating for the best marque in motorcycling as rated by you. This simply gives equal weighting to each category and gives the highest mark (8) to the manufacturer who comes top in each category and lower marks (down to 1) to those who do worst. The total it is possible to score is 96, if a manufacturer topped every category.

Here’s how they total up. Yamaha 76, Kawasaki 68, Honda 65, Triumph 59, Suzuki 54, BMW 54, Aprilia 47, Ducati 47.

To browse the owner reports for any particular bike, you need to go to our BIKES section and track down the bike you require using the options you’ll find on the right of the BIKES section’s front page.

When you arrive at the home page for the bike you’re interested in (and there are more than 240 of them in total) select ” Owners’ reports ” from the black navigation bar.

You’ll find an option to submit your own report at the bottom of each list of owners reports.

Anyone can browse the reports, but to submit one you do need to be a registered user of motorcyclenews.com. But since that is free and easy to do, that shouldn’t put you off. Simply click on LOG IN at the top, right of the page and fill in the online forms.
