Your favourite roads

1 of 1

There are thousands of miles of sweeping roads, glorious views and challenging corners out there – but don’t need to travel the world to find them. It’s all right outside your front door.

We asked you to name your favourite stretches and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response.

Here’s just a sample of the roads you’ve recommended. But as many of you have pointed out, they don’t need to be taken fast to get the best out of them, or the scenery.

We’ll be posting them all up with links to map addresses later today. But if you want to make the best of the summer sun that’s promised over the next few days, why not take a trip and try one of these?

If you would like to tell us which is you r favourite road, simply e-mail dave.batchelor@emap.com with the details and why you think it’s the best of Britain. And if you’ve tried one, tell us what you thought.

Les Twitchen suggests The B660 from Bedford to Kimbolton (amazing knee down twisties). Then either back onto the B660 through Catworth to Giddings (some more knee down) or onto the B645 to Higham Ferrers (even more knee down) – just take it slow through the villages. The picture was taken just off the B660 past Great Gidding – a group of bends in the middle of nowhere – Heaven!!!

Ray Burberry says: For me one of the best roads is the A259 from Hastings to Folkestone. Can be fast but even staying within the limits the bends are ace!

Two friends and I spent a couple of days touring the south and this was the ‘piece de resistance’. Even better when you’ve just had breakfast at Wesson’s Biker Cafe – Horam.

Bladebaiter says: Gotta tell ya about the B1010 between South Woodham-Ferrers and Burnham-on-Crouch in deepest Essex.

It’s the home (and start) stretch of every ride I take and is beginning to get very popular with swarms of weekend sports-bike riders. This road was laid down by the Anglo-Saxons who knew, soon after the invention of the wheel, that they had better cater to bike riders. So around the edge of their square field systems there appeared a series of beautifully crafted 90-degree bends.

Next they worked on the invention of the motorcycle but without much serious success. The road would have to wait another 1000 years before realising the true purpose of its

existence!
