IAM warns scooter riders

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning that the predicted rush onto scooters to beat London’s imminent congestion charges could result in casualties as inexperienced riders take to the streets.

The IAM’s Bryan Lunn explains: ” We can see why scooters and other powered two-wheelers will suddenly be more appealing – as they’re exempt from the new congestion charge.

” But new riders should be particularly careful. They may not have the full control and hazard awareness that experienced motorcyclists have.

” I would hate to think of them ending up in hospital for the sake of saving £5 a day because they haven’t prepared themselves properly for riding in the rush hour. ”

The IAM has produced a new booklet it hopes will promote a greater sense of awareness for these new riders. Called ” Safer scootering ” , it’s free from the IAM stand at the NEC Show.
