Safe haven for town centre bikes

Bikers in Barnstaple in North Devon now have secure parking in the centre of town.

North Devon District Council has added 18specific motorcycle spaces at its car parks near the centre of town. Each features Motoloc bike security to lock your bike. There is a small charge.

The new bays come at a cost of 20p per hour, or £1 for a day. You don’t have buy a ticket, as payment is made per bike bay.

” These bays are all 1 metre wide to allow bikes easy access, and that means removing spaces for cars, ” said car park manager Martyn Williams. ” That means we’d need to get around £750 per year per bay to equal the car revenue and that isn’t going to happen. Bikers are still getting charged at less than the flat rate of 60p per hour for cars, and all the other motorcycle parking areas are still free. ”

Would you be willing to pay to park somewhere secure, and not fight for a railing with cyclists and scooters? Post your comments on the News discussion board by following the link on the right.
