Police are launching a new clampdown focusing on riders’ numberplates.

The Devon and Cornwall force reckon it’s a good way of saving our lives – because if we tamper with our numberplates we must be trying to get away with speeding. And if we’re going to speed we’re obviously more likely to get hurt – according to them.

That’s despite the fact that official stats show that riding or driving in excess of the speed limit is the cause of only around four per cent of all road accidents in the UK.

Officers say one in five riders they spot speeding at more than 100mph have false or illegible plates.
