Bike sales at 5-year high

1 of 1

The number of bikes bought and sold in the UK is at its highest in five years.

The growth is being driven by a boom in used bike sales – an increase so great that it easily outstrips the relatively small fall in new bike sales.

The number of used bikes sold in the UK has grown every year since MCN began tracking them in 2000. Around 90,000 more second hand bikes were sold in 2004 than in the millennium year.

In 2004 new bike sales fell 21,000 to 134,000, but the used bike market continued its upward trend, adding 22,000 sales.

The rise in used bike sales means that the number of new and used bikes being sold in total has once again risen and now totals 588,000 bikes a year.
