20K in 20 days - by R1

1 of 1

Nick Sanders will attempt to cover 20,000 miles in less than 20 days in a bid to set a new world record.

He’ll be riding a 2005 Yamaha R1 and travelling light with just his credit card and camera for company – no tools, no GPS, no change of clothes and no maps.

When he leaves, from the BMF Show in Peterborough on May 22, he’ll be accompanied by MCN’s James Tindall. Look out for a taste of what this challenge is like in our late May issues.

Sanders effort will also be made into a six-part series broadcast on Men & Motors this October.

His route includes India and South East Asia at the height of summer, where the temperatures go up to 50 degrees centigrade.

The R1 may not be an obvious choice, but Sanders sees things differently

“In my opinion the R1 is one of the supreme touring bikes and I know from my previous attempts it has the performance to get me there.”

The bike will have a small spare capacity fuel can in place of the pillion seat and the main fuel tank is enlarged so he can ride non-stop for up to 350 miles. He’ll use tyre sealant in case of punctures.
